RedwoodMaterials Acquires Redux Recycling to Expand Operations in the European Market

RedwoodMaterials, a company focused on sustainable battery materials, has acquired Redux Recycling GmbH, the leading lithium-ion battery recycler in the European Union. This strategic acquisition will allow RedwoodMaterials to expand its operations and strengthen its commitment to the European market.

Driven by automakers’ commitments and strong government support, Europe has become the fastest-growing electric vehicle (EV) market worldwide. To meet the growing demand for battery recycling and material manufacturing, RedwoodMaterials recognizes the need for a well-established presence in Europe.

The acquisition of Redux Recycling positions RedwoodMaterials as a key player in the European market. The facility located in Bremerhaven, Germany, has an annual processing capacity of 10,000 tons and is equipped to recycle various types of lithium-ion batteries. It is also conveniently located near the Port of Bremerhaven, facilitating the transport of EV packs and batteries from across Europe.

In addition to EV batteries, the Redux facility can also recycle electric bike batteries, stationary storage systems, and electronic devices such as cell phones and laptops. This acquisition brings on board a team of approximately 70 experienced technical professionals, including chemical engineers, metallurgists, and materials scientists with expertise in mechanical separation. Their contribution will enable RedwoodMaterials to recover high-purity metal concentrates, a critical input for battery materials production.

RedwoodMaterials’ advanced materials recovery processes, such as hydrometallurgy, complement Redux’s pre-treatment and mechanical separation capabilities. Redux’s patented technology achieves a recovery rate of over 95% for valuable materials like cobalt, lithium, nickel, and manganese. This aligns with RedwoodMaterials’ mission to achieve a high percentage of material recovery in the United States.

This acquisition marks a significant milestone for RedwoodMaterials as it establishes a strong presence in Europe and supports the company’s growth strategy in the region. With the addition of the Redux recycling facility and an experienced team, RedwoodMaterials is well positioned to meet the growing demand for battery recycling and material manufacturing in Europe.
